The second game for Sheffield FC Futsal was against Yorkshire rivals Leeds Barca who were looking for their
first win after a heavy defeat against Middlesborough last time.
Sheffield FC Futsal were looking to build on their great
win against Sheffield & Hallamshire last week but found Leeds a difficult
hard working team.
Leeds started the brighter of both teams and quickly
forced Sheffield keeper Steven Marshall in a wonder save from point blank range
after
some slack defending, both teams struggled to keep the ball and gave possession
away too easily which made the game difficult for both teams.
After 5 mins Leeds Barca should have taken the lead with
several chances going begging and these misses would prove costly as Sheffield
began to settle and play better creating many chances which players wasted but
with 13 minutes gone Alvyn Riley put Sheffield ahead latching onto a great pass
from Liam Morris before putting the ball into the top right corner from an
acute angle.
Leeds then pushed play forward with the keeper making
several long runs into the Sheffield half and again Steven Marshall made
several great saves to keep the 1-0 score line & with Leeds gaining
confidence Sheffield took a timeout with 5 mins remaining.
Sheffield started brighter after the timeout looking to double the lead and with
only 50 secs remaining Matthew Hammond opened his account for the season after
a goalmouth scramble he poked the ball high into the net beating the Barca
keeper from close range.
Leeds came out for the second half all guns blazing and put
Sheffield under great pressure and when Mark England-Woodcock committed a slide
foul after only 1 min he was lucky not to see a yellow card and from the
resulting free-kick Barca should have leveled but keeper Steven Marshall saved
and Frazer Thomas cleared the loose ball before any Barca players could react.
After 5 mins though Leeds got their reward for all the
chances created when a great run was finished well from a tight angle beating
the Sheffield keeper to his bottom left.
The game was becoming physical with both teams hitting 4
fouls after 10mins and Sheffield should have had a penalty when Richard Moore
was brought down after a good run but the referee waved the claim away,
Sheffield started to play better as the game settled and created chances
through James Bennett & Ceri Looker but the Leeds keeper made some
brilliant stops with the best from a Frazer Thomas free-kick.
With 3 mins remaining Sheffield & Leeds were
on 5 fouls and both teams had good claims for penalties but the game ended with
another win for Sheffield FC Futsal but Leeds Barca played extremely well and
might think they deserved a point, but 6 pts puts Sheffield joint top for the next
game Vs Grimsby futsal club on Sunday 6 April at the Institute of Sport in
Sheffield, kick off time 18:50
