After winning their regional tournaments in Sheffield, the teams were both confident of success, especially the Year 11 team, who were defending the title won last year. All the games were played at the Institute of Sport, and featured teams from all around the county, who had won qualifying competitions.
The Year 9 team faced a tough league, which included county representative teams and centres of excellence, including Brentford FC. The team featured good players of their own, with Ricky Smith, Oliver McGrath and Greg Stiffell looking to impress. The Year 11 team included Futsal experts Lewis Peters and Jack Debnam, and two Year 10 boys in Tom Parker and Joe Hutchinson.
The Year 11 team played seven matches in total, winning five, drawing one and losing one. The defeat was to prove clostly, as Team United lifted the title. Highlights from the tournament were Jimmy Major’s impressive debut in goal, Jake Thompson’s reliability in defence and Joe Hutchinson’s strikes which earned him top scorer. The boys were pleased with runners up, but know that the title was there for the taking.
The Year 9 tournament was very close, with three teams at the end battling it out for the National title. The TLS team made a great start, beating the Lincolnshire FA Development team 1-0, but then failed to deliver the goals that should have brought more victories. The tournament went to the final game, and the team were edged out 1-0 by the Brentford FC team. Coach Les Jones was pleased with his team’s efforts, and signalled out ‘keeper Greg Stiffell as his man of the tournament.
The next football for the TLS teams is the Umbro International Football Cup in Dublin, where the Year 9 and Year 10 teams are battling against teams from across Europe and America.
