A new FA initiative in the development and progression of Futsal in England got underway on Sunday March 3rd. Teams from across the country kicked off matches in three new FA approved futsal national leagues providing top level Futsal competition to the finest Futsal teams in England. For those who don't know much about the discipline of Futsal, take a moment to read about it, its fast paced, technical indoor football played by giants of the Football world such as Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Robinho and even England's own Micah Richards. Information about the sport can be found here: www.thefa.com/GrassrootsNew/...

The FA North Conference played host to Leeds’ own FC Barsa as they faced Teessides elite in the form of Middlesbrough Futsal Club. Two clubs with very different histories went into the early kickoff in the division hoping to get their season off to the perfect start with a win. FC Barsa’s team has an average age of approximately 18 and has only been in existence for two years whereas Middlesbrough Futsal Club has slightly more experience pooling their players from Teesside University and local residents. The only ever previous meeting between the two sides ended in a tight draw building up the tension before kickoff.

Barsa coach Kevin Barr brought in two new signings immediately into his youthful lineup, Middlesbrough’s lined up with a familiar look mainly unchanged from their recent league meeting between the University’s 2nd team. Great Britain Universities International Ben Mortlock featuring as their main danger man.

The match was played at a fairly fast pace, both sides were initially quite tentative to attack with the scale of the competition facing them. It was however Boro who asserted themselves the best with a exceptionally well drilled defensive tactics and lightning paced counter attacks which on occasion tore apart FC Barsa's defence. Boro took the advantage in the first half putting 5 goals past Barsa's new keeper.

The second half was a massive improvement from Barsa and brought about their first goal of the competition through Masood Khaligi. Their second half pressure however left them more vulnerable to the Middlesbrough counters and they were punished as Boro ran in 4 more goals before full time. Full Time Boro 10 - 1 FC Barsa

Although the scoreline suggested a drubbing, FC Barsa will go away from the game with their heads held high, Boro will go into the rest of their games as strong favourites and serious contenders for the league title.

The FA National Futsal league is running 3 seperate divisions, a north, south and midlands conference. To see Futsal in action, games are held at 3 central venues: North: Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Sheffield Midlands - Nechells Sports Centre, Birmingham and South - University of Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire. The league will continue to run for the next few months so come along and enjoy the show!
