You cannot hide! You must be involved the whole time. There have been 19 FIFA Soccer World Cups, and of those 19 World Cups, countries that play Futsal have won 15 of them. Players such as Maradonna, Pele, and Messi grew up playing Futsal before switching to soccer.
Since the founding of Futsal in America many have tried to convince the soccer community that they need to be playing Futsal as there are countless benefits that will help improve all soccer skills immediately.

We often see that young soccer players don’t have many chances to shoot in outdoor soccer. Another benefit of Futsal is that it helps provide confidence due to touching the ball more and getting ample chances to bury the ball in the back of the net. And it doesn’t stop there, Futsal also helps in passing, dribbling, transitioning and thinking several steps ahead as the game moves at an incredible pace. If you look at the Spanish team that won the World Cup in 2010, 9 of the 11 starting players on that team were Futsal players. Other countries are getting more involved now, America being one of them.

Americans have seen soccer in the states for some 50 years now. Very few people know about Futsal, but it is growing and is one of the fastest growing sports in America. Futsal is not only a sport in itself, but it will always be the best training model for soccer. It will greatly enhance a soccer player’s skills.
Any child between the ages of 6 and 11 would be better off playing Futsal over outdoor soccer for several reasons. In outdoor soccer the field is too big, and there are not enough touches on the ball. In Futsal, there are 10 times more touches on the ball, so they develop the basic skills faster and it is always more fun to touch the ball than to chase it. In outdoor soccer, most recreational soccer players touch the ball only a few times per game, and the parents are satisfied that their kids are getting exercise and having fun, but by age 12 we lose about 40% of our soccer players in America.

Have a kid play soccer and Futsal, and then ask the kid “what do you like more, Soccer or Futsal?” Every kid will say Futsal. Why will they answer Futsal? Because with Futsal it will no longer be about who is the tallest, the biggest, or the fastest. It will come down to who makes the smarter decisions. The ones who have spent more time with the ball at their feet in their driveway or kicking against a brickwall. Teach them skill and technique first, teach them the basics of soccer. Instill soccer’s essence of creativity through futsal, where the game teaches you the need for 1 and 2 touch play, movement off the ball, transition from defense to offense and attacking aggressiveness. Save the running on a large field for later, when they become fundamentally sound aware and grow into their bodies! Sure, we have all heard of Alexi Lalas and Didier Drogba, whose physical stature and raw skill is already premolded for the outdoor game of soccer. But most soccer players on average are comparable to the size of David Villa, Xavi and Iniesta. Who undoubtedly played Futsal growing up, helping them become the superstar’s of today. America needs players that are more like Messi. He does not use brute strength and he’s arguably the best player in the world, he outplays everyone and scores goals with finesse. He’s a legend, this is the way of soccer, and American soccer will go that way as well, but it all starts with Futsal. There will always be some physical element and it won’t be long before you see Futsal the way you see pickup basketball.

The U12 Boys, U12 Girls & U14 Girls finals took place on Thursday 2nd February and the U14 Boys, U16 Boys & U16 Girls finals were held on Monday 6th February.

The Kent Schools Futsal Competition started in October with almost 200 teams from over 50 secondary schools across the county entering. Schools were first required to battle through one of eight regional qualifying events hosted by the Kent School Games Organisers, with winning schools of each qualifying event then being invited to the county finals event to be in with the chance of being crowned county Futsal champions!

There was a significant media presence and several VIPs were in attendance at the first finals event as this also marked the launch of this year’s Kent School Games. Teams were treated to a freestyle football display by John Farnworth, holder of 4 world records and medals were presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams by Chelsea and England Ladies players, Dani Buet and Claire Rafferty.

Winning schools on the 2nd February were as follows:
U12 Boys – Hayesbrook School (Tonbridge & West Kent)
U12 Girls – Dartford Girls Grammar School (Dartford)
U14 Girls – Walderslade Girls School (Medway)
Snow threatened the second finals event on Monday 6th February, but schools were able to triumph over the conditions and the event went ahead as planned with 18 teams in attendance.
Winning schools on the 6th February were as follows:
U14 Boys – Dane Court Grammar School (Thanet)
U16 Boys – Mascalls School (Tonbridge & West Kent)
U16 Girls – Westlands School (Sheppey & Sittingbourne)

Each of the winning teams will now go on to compete at South-East Regional Finals, which will then lead on to the National finals at the FA National Youth Futsal Festival.

Football Development Officer Richard McHugh said, “It was fantastic to see so many schools entering the competition this year and there was some great Futsal being played at both of the finals events. I would like to thank the Kent School Games Organisers and the Kent Schools FA for their support throughout the competition and everyone involved on the finals day for making the event such a great success.”

On Sunday 19th Sheffield FC Futsal face arguably their biggest game of the season with a trip to league leaders Manchester. The Manchester outfit have been flying high this season and top the Northern league with 22 points from their nine games, and having tasted defeat only once this term. In contrast last year’s northern Champions Sheffield FC Futsal have just 12 points but do have four games in hand on their rivals from across the Pennines due to a combination of the oddities of the fixture computer and postponements due to snow. Sheffield therefore will clearly see this game as a must win in order to stay in touch at the top and be able to make best use of their games in hand, not to mention the added incentive of reversing the 3-2 home defeat suffered at the hands of Manchester in the corresponding fixture earlier this season. Manchester will not be taking the game lightly themselves however, with a recent draw against early season pace-setters Middlesbrough meaning that those two sides are locked firmly in a battle over the top two places in the league. So with so much riding on the game its likely to be a tight and nervy affair with both sides trying to seize the opportunity to really boost their season and put a real dent in the aspirations of the other.

Marc, 33, who lives in Derby, has been refereeing Futsal since 2004, and quickly progressed through the levels domestically before being selected for promotion to the FIFA list in 2008. He referees on the FA National Futsal League, which comprises of a North, Midlands and South Division (follow link for further information). He decided to step back from refereeing 11-a-side football, where he operated at Level 4, at the end of the 2010-2011 season to concentrate solely on Futsal, and to spend more time with his young family, a decision that has reaped its rewards with this fantastic appointment.
Internationally, he has refereed several big games, including taking charge of the Barcelona Futsal team in the UEFA Futsal Cup (Futsal’s equivalent of the UEFA Champions League) in Latvia, and Serbia v Russia in a World University Championship Semi-Final. Marc has recently returned from Slovenia where he refereed FIFA World Cup Qualification matches between Serbia, Israel, Moldova, and hosts Slovenia.
Marc, who is Derby’s Get Into Football Officer, has also been instrumental in developing Futsal within Derby at Willows Sports Centre, and tutored a Futsal Referee Conversion course for Derbyshire FA Referees that saw 15 officials qualify as Futsal referees.
Derbyshire FA Referee Development Officer Nick Hopton said, “It is always fantastic when any Derbyshire referee gets appointed to officiate at any big game, but to have one of our referees representing England at the European Championships is something extra special, and I would like to offer Marc my congratulations for his fantastic achievement. There is only one other referee in England who can say he has been selected to referee at Euro 2012 next year, and that is Howard Webb, so Marc is in excellent company!”

The local club who have been at the forefront of developing Futsal in the local community defeated the other seven clubs in the league scoring 106 goals in the process.

Over the last 14 weeks more than 125 players have taken part in what turned out to be a hugely competitive league.

Kettering Futsal Club Black were presented with their trophy by MR. Bob Cotter, Chairman of The Northamptonshire Football Association who commented ‘ Futsal has proved itself to be really popular in Kettering. The standard of play and conduct of the players has been very encouraging during the last 14 weeks and we look forward to building on this successful format in the future throughout the rest of Northamptonshire’

During the presentation evening Dom Machell from Chin High Petey was awarded The Golden Boot as the leagues top goalscorer with 30 goals.

Futsal is an indoor format of five-a-side football. It is more technical and skilled than ordinary five-a-side football, is played indoors on marked pitches, with hockey-sized goals, a smaller heavier ball and a number of rule variations.
The rules and nature of the game lend themselves to players developing excellent movement, improved ability to manipulate the ball in tight spaces and gain a better tactical and technical awareness.

Asked a very good futsal player/coach how he was getting on teaching new junior football players on his six week futsal taster course.
‘Fine’ he said, ‘just one problem, because the players have only played football, having difficulty getting them to keep the ball on the floor.’
My coaching group, same age, have played very little football, the ball is always on the floor.
